Karen Teal

After teaching Art, Design and Textiles in Wales for 26 years and 6 years Internationally in China and Switzerland I have returned home to Wales. Having worked with students and communities in education and delivering workshops I am looking to use my practical skills, knowledge of art education and curation in a new vein.

It has long been an interest of mine to link my passion for Art and my skills as an educationalist with my vast amount of project ideas that give all students an opportunity to succeed and excel in Visual Art.

Having been a Visual and Performing arts coordinator (overseeing Art, Music and Drama for 8 years) I have good skills working in a team, liaising with governors, senior management, parents, students and community. I have organised many internal and external events over my years in education including exhibitions for examination reviews, open art evenings in local galleries in the community, charity events and sourced artists to give workshops and presentations so I have a deep understanding of the varied requirements of schools when looking for creative practioners.

I believe myself to be a passionate and enthusiastic teacher/practitioner and in my work with students of all ages, to be inclusive and give all students the ability to succeed I have used, differentiation, Embedded English for students who have English as a second language, Assessment for Learning, and Gifted and Talented support, therefore can create unique programmes and workshops tailor made to schools.

My teaching experiences have given me a wealth of understanding and skills with which to plan, coordinate, review, resource, establish relationships and work with schools and teachers in many different capacities. I also worked on co-curriculum projects with music, history, maths and science and in all areas, I was able to create projects that linked Art and Textiles with the subjects. This gave the students a good understanding of how the subjects were interlinked and not necessarily a standalone subject.

I am a practicing artist of many forms of art, printmaking, feltmaking, textiles and free stitch embroidery and enjoy giving workshops, and when time permits continuing my own development on Art courses, visiting galleries and sharing good practice and ideas with my International network of art teachers and artists.
