ARTISTS / Sylvia Paul

I have been painting and exhibiting my work since leaving education and still enjoy working with a range of media and subject matter. I have developed a free and expressive style of working with oils using a knife over an under painting of acrylics. My still life paintings are particularly bold and colourful having paid particular attention to the set up in the studio often including flamboyant flowers and drapes.

Over many years I have explored a range of subject matter including landscapes inspired by the footpaths of rural Essex or the coast near where I live in Harwich.

My mixed media work using acrylic and paper collage has recently been inspired by travels to Japan and European cities as well as subjects closer to home of interiors and landscape.

Sometimes more abstract in style the collage work shows a keen desire for experimentation and development. My connection with Japan has particularly inspired my work while providing opportunities for exhibiting and building a following in that country.

Since 2013 I have also worked in fabric and stitch and this textile art has been shown in galleries in Japan alongside my collages, and at The Tokomachi Quilt Festival. I was made a member of Art Textiles Made in Britain in 2016 and exhibit my textiles with the group.
