Call Out: Pantomime

Pantomime

This year we have decided to run a themed open exhibition to be displayed in Queen Street Studios, (40 Queen Street) alongside our annual Winter exhibition in the Canterbury Lofts.

We have chosen the theme ‘Pantomime’ to celebrate the traditional Christmas treat.

Pantomime has a rich history in the UK and in other parts of the world, especially at Christmas. Traditional British pantomimes typically adapt a well know story or fairy tale and add comedy, contemporary music, catchphrases, drag, pop culture and local references and audience participation.

There are plenty of pantomime stories to be inspired by such as Cinderella, Aladdin, Snow White, Dick Whittington, Jack and the Beanstalk, Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast and many more!

There are also the traditional pantomime roles like the Dame, the villain, the principal male and female roles, harlequins and jesters, the comic sidekick and magical creatures.

Modern pantomime evolved in the 18th century in Britain but its roots go back to the 16th century Italian commedia dell’arte theatre and even ancient Greece and Rome.

We’d like to invite artists create artwork inspired by Pantomime with successful applications being exhibited in Queen Street Studios in December.

Art can be of any medium or style, traditional painting and illustration, print, ceramic & sculpture, textiles, collage, digital.

We do not accept AI generated art in our exhibitions
