Victor Vasarely was a French-Hungarian artist credited as the father of the Op Art movement. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, the artist created compelling illusions of spatial depth, as seen in his work Vega-Nor (1969). Vasarely’s method of painting borrowed from a range of influences, including Bauhaus design principles, Wassily Kandinsky, and Constructivism.
Born Vásárhelyi Gyozo on April 9, 1906 in Pécs, Hungary, he briefly studied medicine at university, but after two years dedicated himself instead to painting. In the late 1920s, Vasarely enrolled at the Muhely Academy in Budapest, where the syllabus was largely based on Walter Gropius’s Bauhaus school in Germany.
After settling in Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked as a graphic artist while creating many proto-Op Art works including Zebra (1937). The artist experimented in a style based in Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism during the 1940s, before arriving at his hallmark checkerboard works. Op Art went on to have a number of practitioners, including Bridget Riley and Yaacov Agam.

Michael was born in Adamsdown in Cardiff. An ex-steelworker, he looks for the dramatic in simple scenes.
Michael is influenced by European culture and by music. He sees music as the quickest way to communicate emotions and feelings, his paintings are inspired by that emotion. He manages to communicate these emotions to the observer, by building a shared experience through the process evident in the painting.
He believes that art should speak for itself and be its own advocate.

Wynne Jenkins was a native of Llangennech, Llanelli. He was educated at Llanelli Boys Grammar School and a graduate of University of Wales, Swansea.
Carmarthen was his home for over 30 years.
Through his painting he had the opportunity to transform "everyday" scenes into an art form - the timelessness of Wales' seascapes and mountains artistically unfold. The palette knife, rather the brush ensures a precision of relevant detail brought to the eye of the observer.
His subjects are unmistakably Welsh, and his bold and broad palette gives his work great vivacity and verve. His buildings, often cinched and leaning seem to dance and throb with the energy of the lives and history within.
There is no melancholy here, no sense of a community in decline or retreat. Rather, we have a vision of a place full of light, energy and love.

Valerie Ganz was a Welsh genre painter known for her expressive depictions of dancers and miners. A notable part of Ganz’s practice was that she made observational drawings deep in the mines of the Six Bells Colliery in Wales. “There were moments when I was scared but I got used to it,” she said. “I knew where I could go and what I could and couldn’t do. The miners soon trusted me and I tried not to disrupt the routine of their work.”
Born in 1936 in Swansea, United Kingdom, she attended the Swansea College of Art and went on to become an elected a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy.
The artist died on September 28, 2015 in Swansea, United Kingdom.
Today, her works are held in the collections of the National Coal Mining Museum for England in Wakefield and the Newport Museum and Art Gallery in Wales.
