Phil Alder: Recent Paintings (from the garden)

12th April - 1st May 2021

An exhibition chosen from paintings made between 2015 and 2020 and selected to show the range of the artist’s work and his commitment to an overriding vision.

In the early 1980’s Phil Alder began to concentrate his painting on his immediate surroundings of woodland, gardens, orchards and beekeeping.

Those places he knows well, now principally gardens, and to a lesser extent open land, has remained his primary source material to this day for paintings about, light, colour, rhythm, textures and....paint.

These days he mainly uses watercolour to paint and draw directly from his source material during spring, and summer either from the garden or, more recently as ‘botanical’ still-life’s. In the autumn and winter months he uses oil paint in studio paintings recollecting particular experiences and sensations: the ‘inner image’ of those times spent in the garden or with nature.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue including commentary by others.
