ARTISTS / Rose Davies

I am Rosie Scribblah aka Rose Davies and I’m an artist, educator and blogger. I work directly from life, carrying a sketchbook at all times looking for any opportunity to have a scribble. Drawing underpins my art practice. And I’m a printmaker and occasionally a painter. I work on the streets, in public, indoors and outdoors, bringing the practice of art directly to people who may never have been into a gallery or seen art being created. Sometimes my sketchbook drawings become the basis for printmaking work, linocuts and woodcuts, monotypes, screenprints, or paintings.
I work from my studio in Swansea, where I live with my partner and our cats, Sparta Puss and William ChatNoir. My artwork has appeared in traditional and online galleries, in print, and on television. I also work internationally and have carried out residencies in the USA and Pakistan. I have a Masters in Adult Education from University of Wales, Swansea; a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from West Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education; and a Diploma in Art from Swansea Art College.
I post daily on my blog, mostly drawings but sometimes work in progress and printmaking. I have thousands of drawings in sketchbooks; it’s hard to exhibit sketches in galleries and yet lots of people like to see drawings, so a blog seems like a good idea. It also motivates me to keep trying to draw every day – it’s easy to let life get in the way of drawing.
This set of small unique screenprints is based on drawings I did from the Swansea Museum archives – taxidermy birds and invertebrates. I also included some imagery based on rubbish – the sort that ends up in our rivers and seas. I wanted to link the two types of images together to highlight that our human actions have an effect on other species.
