ARTISTS / Jonathan Hunt

Jonathan Hunt is a Swansea-based artist whose work captures his reaction to landscape and cityscape. Trained in fine art in Swansea during the 1990s, he has spent years refining a distinctive, expressive style that embraces spontaneity and movement.

Living and working on the edge of the Gower Peninsula with his family and pets, Jonathan draws inspiration from the rugged beauty of the Welsh landscape. A dedicated plein-air painter, he immerses himself in the environment, responding to shifting light, weather, and atmosphere. His work often reflects the immediacy of the moment, with fluid, gestural marks that convey both energy and emotion.

Jonathan’s painterly approach is rooted in a deep appreciation for ink markers & watercolours unpredictable interactions of application in the environment. His technique balances control and freedom, allowing pigments and shape to bleed, blend, and settle organically on the surface. This interplay of chance and intention creates a sense of movement, encouraging viewers to engage with the work on an intuitive level, interpreting shapes and forms through their own experiences.

Alongside his landscape practice, Jonathan also explores the human form within a local Life Drawing group, using expressive marks to capture movement and form. The contrast between figures and natural scenes enriches his artistic practice, offering different perspectives on light, form, and composition.

A regular contributor to Swansea’s Glynn Vivian Annual Open Exhibition, Jonathan has exhibited widely across Swansea and South Wales. His work continues to evolve, driven by an appetite for capturing the fleeting and ever-changing essence of the world around him.
