‘About Time’

The first exhibition in the Project ‘Welsh Group 8 Shows’

March 2nd - 30th

Opening March 2nd 2pm

This show brings together artists who make work about time explicitly, or who explore variations on a theme or subject over time, often over many decades.

Paul Edwards’ self-portraits trace changes across a lifetime of working in the studio, a ‘mirror to the world’. Jennifer Allen makes work that is introspective and seeks to make sense of the self. Dilys Jackson makes structures that take as subject pollens that existed in the world before humans, before art and over millennia. Pip Woolf makes work that explores our place on the planet focussing on a combination of practical, physical, emotional, political and philosophical questions. Philip Watkins paints images of the urban environment, he paints ‘in between places’ the kind of place you move through on the way to somewhere else.

We are so excited to have members of the Welsh Group exhibiting with us this coming March!

Side by Side: Bert and Bren Evans

2nd - 27th March 2024

While they have showcased their art together numerous times in mixed shows, this show marks their second joint exhibition at Queen Street Gallery.

Despite their contrasting approaches and styles, their work harmonises beautifully to create a captivating exhibit at the Gallery.

The duo first crossed paths at Newport College of Art in the Early 70s, with Bren studying Graphic Design and Bert focusing on Illustration.

Here are some thoughts from the pair....

BERT

I work in a variety of mediums and typically have multiple paintings in progress simultaneously, which helps keep things exciting. When one painting poses a challenge, I can easily switch to another and often find that the solution presents itself.

My artistic inspirations come from everyday life and I aim to portray the truth as I perceive it. I draw my subjects from a variety of sources, including photos and painting en plein air. My creativity flows freely as the mood strikes.

While people are a common theme in my artwork, I find portraiture particularly captivating as it allows me to delve into the intricacies of a face. The human form is endlessly fascinating.

Occasionally, I incorporate reference materials into my work, as seen in my Tiger Bay Quartet series.

BREN

Despite having my own studio, I prefer to work in our cosy living room next to our two little dogs – I value my comfort. Meanwhile, he (Bert), is working in his garden shed.

Hailing from Holy Island, Anglesey and growing up by the sea, the sea is a frequent inspiration for my paintings.

However, painting outdoors is not for me!

International Textile Exhibition

UPDATE!

We are extending our deadline!

Our submission deadline is now May 1st 2024

Remembering the Past: Creating the Future

Attention all textile artists, designers, and creative individuals! We are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity to participate in an international textile exhibition inspired by the theme “Creating the Future: Remembering the Past.” This exhibition seeks to explore the fascinating world of contemporary textile art by delving into the intricate web of present-day life while drawing inspiration from our collective past.

We invite you to submit your works that delve into common themes of contemporary textile art. By exploring themes such as identity, the body, technology, globalisation, migration, society, culture, memory, the passage of time, and artistic critique of socio-political institutions, we aim to create a thought-provoking and visually stunning exhibition that pushes boundaries and sparks conversations. No need for new work, existing work can be exhibited.

The festival connected to this exhibition explores the rich history of textile production in Wales, particularly in South-west Wales where there were 325 woollen mills by 1895. With its hilly terrain and plentiful river water, Wales witnessed unprecedented growth in the textile industry, utilizing local sheep wool to create exquisite textiles. Textile art today reflects on the past and envisions the future, becoming a complex examination of present-day life.

Whether you are an established artist or an emerging talent, we encourage you to participate in this international textile exhibition. Come and join us as we celebrate the legacy of Welsh textile production and the evolution of textile art in the present day.
