Colourful Reflections. An Exhibition by Sara Bentley and Sheila Phillipson
November 1st - 29th
Opening Saturday November 1st, 2pm
“The title Colourful Reflections embodies the dual nature of the exhibition: it is both a celebration of vibrant palettes and an exploration of the ways our environment engages with emotions.
Each work is layered with hues that carry emotional resonance, transforming colour into a language of memory, identity, and lived experience.
Just as reflections shift depending on light and perspective, these pieces invite multiple readings—what is seen at first glance may change upon closer encounter. The exhibition does not present colour as surface alone, but as depth: a prism through which stories, emotions, and inner landscapes refract. In this sense, Colourful Reflections is not only about what is on the canvas but also about what emerges in the viewer—the recognition, curiosity, and self-awareness sparked in the act of looking.”

For many years I have used newsprint to make my sculpture. I like that its repurposed stories become part of a new narrative reconstructed out of memory, protest and concern for the future. Working on this exhibition has been a collaborative experience that has yielded new ways of seeing and working. It has prompted me to explored new techniques and materials borrowing from the art of textiles to enrich the narrative.
Crows have often featured in my work. I love the way they move, the way they live communally, that they mate for life and I admire their intelligence. Crows are endlessly curious, though they seem to cast a critical, sometimes malevolent eye on the world. My paper crows add whimsy to the pieces and an invitation to look anew at our assumptions and embrace new more radical solutions.

From a young age, l have had a natural affinity with plant life. As did my mother.
Always wanting to know and learn their names and what growing conditions they like, and loving their varieties, textures, shape, and colour.
And that has not left me.
Always adhering to the
'Pick some and leave some' way of preserving for the future.
Here expressing my inspiration from what is in my landscape.
Wool, Flax, local Hard rush, twisted paper string,
Husk, some mother tongue and local plant names.
Sewn, Felted ,Woven ,Knitted , Crocheted and Netting techniques. Celebrating natural materials. Play and see what materials can do, and have done in the past.
Today, we live in a world where major businesses are ruling nature with no commitment to the care or health of nature.
Red listed endangered plant and wildlife. Seeds needing to be archived and banked.
Leaving a legacy of Soil erosion. Lack of fertile land where communities, their language and cultures are lost and displaced.
We celebrate our life and passing.
We mark time. With plants.
These natural materials are my playground for relearning, sharing and celebrating the difference between plant life and humans.
