Viewpoints: Three Approaches to the Landscape

A joint exhibition between Steve Evans, Rachel Jones and Elaine McLennan which explores familiar Welsh landscapes through the eyes of the artists.

Running from July 5 to July 26, 2025.

Steve Evans

"In my landscapes I like to capture the expression and mood of the scene by introducing different elements to focus on, such as, an old tree, a boat or buildings, where overtime nature can disfigure, decay and change appearance and colour. The environment can express the mood of the landscape through the colour of the sky reflecting onto the long grass flowing in the wind, a bright blue skygiving the impression of a fresh summers day and rolling clouds dancing giving excitement and intrigue."

Rachel Jones

Landscape artist Rachel Jones is continuously inspired by the natural beauty of South and West Wales. Living and working in Swansea, she is drawn to quiet, open spaces that invoke a sense of peaceful solitude. Rachel’s paintings share her own sense of joy and wonder whilst inviting viewers to moments of quiet reflection amidst nature’s splendour.

In this new body of work, Rachel expresses her deep attachment to the environment through a combination of observed and imagined elements of the Welsh landscape. She seeks to create spaces of peacefulness and calm, inviting viewers into a serene and contemplative realm.

Elaine McLennan

“Based in the upper Swansea Valley on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, my work is influenced by what surrounds: light source, weather, colour, shade, and sound. I’m intrigued by the opposites that create energy: the push and pull, permanence and change, movement, and stillness, light and dark, orange and blue. My work is both representative and semi abstract, but always based on the physical, using actual references to generate thought and form.”
